Pacific and Caribbean: Two Coasts, Two Different Experiences
Costa Rica has two coastlines: the Caribbean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
The two coasts offer very different experiences, especially when it comes to climate, landscape, and pace of life.
On the Caribbean side, rainfall is distributed more evenly throughout the year, and there is no sharply defined dry season like there is on the Pacific side. There are generally two relatively drier periods, from February to March and again from September to October.
On the Pacific side, by contrast, the difference between the dry and rainy seasons is more pronounced. The dry season generally runs from December through March, with April acting as a transition month, while the rainier season is concentrated mainly from May through October.
That does not mean one coast is better than the other. It depends on the type of experience you are looking for.
For a vacation, both can offer a lot. But for anyone considering a home in Costa Rica to use for longer stays, accessibility, nearby services, airport access, international communities, and ease of property management become just as important as the scenery.
That is why the Northern Pacific, and Guanacaste in particular, deserves special attention.
