How public healthcare works in Costa Rica
The public healthcare system is managed by the Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social (CCSS), commonly known as the “Caja.” Enrollment is mandatory for those who obtain residency and provides very broad coverage, including medical visits, diagnostic tests, hospital care, and essential medications.
The Caja represents a key reference point for both the local population and foreign residents. It is a solid system, widespread throughout the country, and designed to offer long-term, continuous care. For many people, it forms the foundation of their healthcare security once they move to Costa Rica.
